St Ives Town Council operates at the most local level of local government. 16 Councillors are elected for a term of four years and those currently elected will now hold office until May 2017, serving the town and surrounding areas in a voluntary capacity. The town council was established in 1974, following the reorganisation of local government at that time, and has continued to uphold many of the traditions and ceremonies of the former Borough.
The Councillors are supported by a small team of paid officers, headed by the Town Clerk.
St Ives Town Council works to fulfil its duties and to do everything within its powers to maintain and improve the quality of life for residents. It also helps the functioning of the town and surrounding area to benefit businesses. The local economy is important to residents, traders and the many visitors to the area throughout the year. It conducts its main business through committees which meet regularly, along with the Devolution Panel and the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group.
There are a number of Civic and Mayoral functions each year, as well as community events and projects that we organise.
Based at the St Ives Guildhall, a building whose management was transferred to St Ives Town Council in April 2013, the Guildhall is pleased to host an array of events and regular features such as the Farmers Market every Thursday and other regular markets.
