Holidays in St Ives often have a focus on fitness and activity, with people coming to Cornwall for the world-class surfing or excellent walking. However, if you’d like to keep up your usual fitness routine while you’re on holiday, here are our suggestions for a great workout in St Ives Bay.

Bootcamp Sessions

Fitness Classes and 1:1 Personal Training

Empirical Fitness is run by former Royal Marines Commando, Will Nankervis. He runs group strength and fitness classes at his studio gym at St. Ives RFC. They us an array of free weights equipment incorporated with running, rowing and much more. There are classes for all abilities and the full timetable can be found at www.empirical-fitness.co.uk

If you prefer the 1:1 approach, then keep up with your current regime by booking in for a personal training session.

Located in next-door Hayle, CrossFit Belerion welcomes fellow CrossFitters from across the world. A visitor session costs just £10 – however, if you’re staying in St Ives for a week or two, please contact Belerion in advance, and they can work out a holiday programme for you.

For the uninitiated, CrossFit is a high-intensity and varied fitness regimen. It uses elements from a selection of sports and disciplines to create individually-tailored programmes based on the body’s core and functional (day-to-day) movements.

A yoga session on the sand, with the sea sparkling behind you. It sounds, and is, an idyllic way to start your day.

Lucy Aldridge is an Iyengar yoga teacher based in St Ives, who regularly runs yoga sessions in West Beach, the far end of Porthmeor beach. Obviously, this is Cornwall not Barbados, and the weather can prevent this from being a truly zen-like experience. Not to worry, as Lucy runs classes in Carbis Bay Memorial Hall. Her drop-in classes cost £10 per session.

Gym & Swim

Perched up above the town, with some of the best views ever from a public swimming pool, St Ives Leisure Centre has a 25m swimming pool, a learner pool, a gym, and runs a range of classes. You can can arrange to have a temporary membership during your holiday, which also gives you access to the other Tempus Leisure centres across Cornwall.

There are plenty of other options to keep fit on your St Ives holiday. If you want to combine fitness with a spot of pampering, Tregenna Castle Hotel has a fitness suite open to non-residents, and St Ives Harbour Spa offers seasonal membership for non-residents. For more family-focussed fitness, the leisure centre in Penzance has similar facilities to St Ives, and is a great place for a swim.
