Joe Hill’s North Ark is a new jazz septet, started in 2017. They play original compositions and arrangements by Joe, which are influenced by a wide variety of artists, such as Phronesis, Marius Neset, The Impossible Gentlemen and Tim Garland. The wide variety of music written for the septet likes to engage not just the modern jazz lover, but fans of any music genre, and therefore contains a whole combination of grooves, improvisation, accessible harmonic sequences, melodic writing and odd time signatures. As well as playing original music, the band likes to put their twist on older and more well known music, inspiring the band’s arrangement of ‘Blackbird’ by The Beatles.
The line up contains some of the U.K’s top jazz musicians of the next generation, who between them have toured internationally and nationally with names such as Liane Carroll, James Maddrenand Soweto Kinch. Amongst them is Tom Smith, recent finalist of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Jazz Award, and Rory Ingham, winner of the Rising Star category in the British Jazz Awards 2017.
