The Lodge at Balnoon is set in some 7 acres of moorland with a rich history. ‘Balnoon’ translates from Cornish as ‘mine on the moor’ or ‘mine on the hillside’ and was originally a mining community dating back to at least the 1700s. In the grounds there is a derelict miners’ chapel which is believed to have been built in around 1758. Part of the building that now forms ‘The Lodge’ dates back to a similar time; the restaurant/bar area’s impressive granite walls and fireplace are thought to be that of the mine’s Count House.
